These cards can be used in a variety of ways. Each card has a strategy at the top with sentence starters under them to help students participate in a conversation about a book. The strategies are connect, reflect, apply and question. Often times students can not think of what to say when having a book discussion. Make as many copies of these cards as you want. Then deal out the cards to the students at the guided reading group, literacy center or in the book discussion. You can make sure that each child gets one of each card, or you can shuffle any random number of cards and distribute. As students add to the discussion using the sentence starter on the card, they can discard the card to the middle of the circle. Using the cards is a fun way to hold every child accountable for participating in the discussion with a quality thought and at the same time makes guided reading or the disucussion feel like a game. I have included tailored sentence starters for fiction and non-fiction text. I hope your class enjoys them as much as mine does.
