Kids LOVE labels! This emergent/beginning reader is perfect for the beginning of the school year as a guided reading lesson or as a whole group lesson using available projection technology. Emergent readers will need support, as the text doesn’t follow an exact pattern and the sentence length varies. There is, however, a lot of picture support and many sight words are present in the text. On each of 11 pages, there is an illustration of a familiar school activity. The activities/subjects included are:
pocket chart/word work
getting in line for dismissal
Each page has a sentence telling about what “we do at school”, the illustration, and 5-7 “labels” for details in the picture. The labels are in a legible, kid-friendly font, so the students can easily copy and/or read them.
The book is great for reading lessons, but can also be a super resource for writing, used as a place to go for “school words.” Also, depending on the needs and level of your students, you might take these vocabulary words and have the students write their own sentences, make word cards and have them alphabetize the words, sort the words for number of syllables, etc.
The product comes with 2 of each page per one 8 X 11 paper, so you just print them, cut them, and staple. The product is color, but prints quite well in grayscale if that is what you prefer.
The pages are very “busy”-full of color, letters, interesting stuff- I wanted to let you know, because, although I think the majority of students will love all the busy pictures, if you have students who have visual discrimination issues, this is probably not the best beginning reading resource for them.
I had lots of fun creating this book, and I look forward to using it with first graders during the coming school year. Thank you for your interest in my product! Please leave feedback, as I truly value the opinions of my colleagues as I continue to create instructional materials.
