This bundle includes separate guided reading activities for Patrick Henry's Speech to the Virginia Convention, Thomas Paine's The Crisis No. 1 (Abridged), and Thomas Jefferson's The Declaration of Independence.
Each guided reading is set up as a double-sided journal, with the text on one side and questions with space to annotate on the other. Each guided reading also includes an answer key.
I have used these guided readings in tenth grade ELA classes. The questions ask about logical, emotional, and ethical appeal (I have a free handout on these in my store), basic grammar terms (like subject and verb, etc.), and basic literary terms (like metaphor).
Older students, or students with experience with guided reading, could complete the activities on their own. Younger or less experienced students would benefit from either the teacher leading the reading or from working in pairs on the readings. Teachers may also choose to have students listen to The Speech to the Virginia Convention (The Williamsburg website has a nice audio) and The Declaration (there are several good versions on Youtube).
All of the guides may be purchased separately as well.
