Guided Reading or Boook Club Lesson Plan
Each chapter is broken down to include an introduction, stopping places for discussion, and a journal reflection question. The stopping places allow students to connect with the characters or explore different vocabulary (essential for ELL learners) and guide discussion while reading. The journal reflection questions focus on higher level thinking skills (inferring, predicting, connecting). Each question comes with a sentence starter. It allows students to focus and use evidence from the book in their reflecting.
My students really enjoyed reading this book a lot! The reflection questions along the way helped them to focus on the higher-order thinking skills and allowing them to find evidence to support their opinions.
Timeline: This was used with a small group of students who met 30 minutes a day/3 times a week. They focused on a chapter a day and worked with this book for 3 weeks.
Standards: The standards I focused on were second grade standards as that is the grade I am currently teaching but this text would work for other grade levels as well.
