Let’s Keep Guided Reading SIMPLE!
This pack was created to provide teachers with simple, yet effective resources for guided reading. When creating this pack I tried to keep in mind the many road blocks teachers may encounter during guided reading: time, organization of materials, lack of resources, and limited copies.

What is included?

The pack includes four fiction and four nonfiction leveled readers. They are written at an approximate level J/ DRA 18. The books were written to conserve copies as much as possible. The books use two single sided pages. The books will be cut into fourths and will need to be assembled by the teacher. All the images are provided in black and white to save ink. Three days of lesson plans are included for each text. The simple lessons are perfect for the teacher, paraprofessional, or even a parent helper. The lessons are only 1 page total to conserve ink.

For each guided reading the following materials are included:

• Three days of short, effective lesson plans
• Vocabulary/ tricky word cards
• A “Check In” about the text with three open answer questions. This is the last page in the text and can be included for students to write in. Teachers can also not include it in the book and use it as a separate activity so the books can be reused for several years.
• A chart showing all the skills taught or touched on in all the lessons is included.

What topics are skills are covered?
Four fiction and four nonfiction books are included in the set.
Fiction Titles and Skills:
• Dragon’s Problem- Character Response
• Karrie’s Ball- Story Elements
• The Fox and the Stork (fable) - Sequencing
• The Crow and the Pitcher (fable) - Questioning

Nonfiction Titles and Skills:
• Camels- Main Idea
• Kites- Questioning
• Let’s Go to the Pet Shop- Fact and Opinion
• Communities- Text Features

How can I organize these materials?
The texts and all materials are purposely written to save paper and ink. Most pages can be cut into fourths. This was done purposely. The materials for each text fit perfectly in a 4” x 6” photo case. The Iris Photo Boxes from Michaels or Amazon are a perfect way to store the materials. One case includes 16 photo boxes. When creating this set, I did this so one row of the case could contain all the levels included in one pack. If the teacher choses to implement this organizational system, then only two Iris Photo Boxes can store ALL the materials in this series.

Do I have to use a fancy box to store them?
Nope! You can organize the materials any way you chose. You can simply put each set in a sandwich sized zip-lock bag! For easy storage, you can use any Dollar Store plastic boxes to hold all the zip lock bags for each level!
