This is a guided reading lesson plan that will help students become independent at this level. It starts out by telling students difficulties that they may encounter at this level. After that it goes into a thorough book introduction and tells students problems that they should pay attention to. The last page is a list of assignments with questions for students to think about as they're reading and to write about. It also has some vocabulary words that may become a problem, that are important for them to know.
When I do guided reading groups, I work with groups of 3-5. When we meet each time we discuss retell what happened and have a discussion about student's interpretations to the answers. Then the students begin reading the next assigned portion and I listen in on each student reading. At the end of each session I give the students a slip of paper that tells their assigned reading with focus questions for them to think and write about.
This has been paramount in helping students move reading levels in my class, improve their writing, and talking about reading. I have a lot more different guided reading books and levels coming.
Note: This goes along well with the writing about reading prompts and the writing about reading packet.
