This guided reading lesson is designed to support multiple groups of students reading multiple books within one classroom.
The lesson begins with general vocabulary review and moves into an essential question that frames the day’s focus. Students are then released to at least 20 minutes of independent reading of their books with the task of taking notes and thinking through answers related to the day’s essential question. Following independent reading, students have an opportunity to discuss their thoughts with their book club groups, giving and getting feedback on their ideas. Finally, the class concludes with a short answer exit ticket designed to gauge mastery of the day’s concept.
