This 24-page packet engages students in using reading strategies to bolster understanding of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. The packet is designed as a help to students reading Les Miserables independently, complete with notes on the text, occasional permission to "skim," visual prompts, and various reading activities and strategies. The long task of reading has been broken down into manageable chunks of about 30-35 pages from the book. Each page of the packet can be torn out and turned in after that section of the book is completed. I created and used this packet with 9th graders: both struggling readers and advanced readers enjoyed the motivation, accountability, and help that came from this reading companion.
The packet correlates with the pagination (and abridgment) of the Fawcett Abridged Edition. It is a 400 page, Mass-Market green paperback.
