Project based learning in a podcast! Assess comprehension and reading strategies by creating a podcast with your class or guided reading group.
This script is an excellent ongoing project to complete within guided reading groups as a reading response or during reading activity. It focuses on comprehension skills such as identifying the character, setting, and main events in a story, as well as identifying any reading strategies used for decoding words, identifying the meanings of words, and more.
Make sure to provide mini-lessons on each piece of the podcast script throughout the process of reading the book of choice with your reading group. By the end of the book, the goals attached to the completion of the script should be familiar to all students involved. The actual recording of the podcast is the presentation piece, or icing on the cake. One of the most exciting parts about this project is that it can live over time and be added to throughout a student’s entire reading experience in your classroom or maybe even beyond! It also makes for a great recommendation for a reading response activity during summer vacations.
