WHAT ARE DISCUSSION STICKS?
Discussion Sticks are discussion questions to get students talking about books and other materials that they are reading. Discussions deepen comprehension and support all students to hear varied thinking about learning. The discussion questions are on squares. These squares are cut out and glued on a craft stick to turn them into a "Discussion Stick". The sticks can be placed in a cup, so they stand up. This works as a visual focus for students. Additionally, the use of a "stick" helps turn discussion questions into a format that incorporates manipulation...helping those kids that need that "little bit of movement" while they learn.
HOW DO I USE DISCUSSION STICKS?
Use the discussion sticks in Guided Reading, Small Group Instruction, Whole Group Book Talks, Literature Circles, etc. The teacher can preselect discussion questions (sticks) and place them in a container where students can reach them. Have a student select a discussion stick, share it with others and begin a discussion about a shared text. This provides students with a sense of ownership in their learning as they are given a choice in the questions they discuss. The sticks allow the teacher to control the topics discussed, ensuring targeted learning to meet the academic needs of the students.
