This set includes over 60 cards of tricky sounds, blends, and digraphs. Each time I meet with emergent readers, I use these cards to engage in the repetition required to learn blends, digraphs, and plain old tricky letters. Generally, I wait until the sound has been introduced during whole group. Once it has been covered, I add the card to my ring (hole punch corner of card and keep with others on a ring) to use at the table. I begin by modeling the procedure for several days/weeks at the beginning of the year, then doing it with them for a period of time...and then eventually students are able to do it together themselves, as I hold up and turn each card. The repetition is key. We say the sound (not letter names) three times, and then add the end of the phrase:
le, le, le, as in table.. ch, ch, ch as in chin...wh, wh, wh as in white.
I keep the cards simple, so as to not distract the kids...without picture cues, because I want them to learn the sounds and associate them with the word- not picture. These can also be used after practice to a literacy station.
