I use this form prior to reading with my upper elementary guided reading groups. This activity goes well with a modified guided reading lesson for English language learners. It is used to pre-teach essential vocabulary for the book and set a purpose for reading. I ask the students to do a "picture walk" or preview the book prior to reading. They decide if the book is fiction or nonfiction and select which features they noticed in their preview. The students fill in words I select and we discuss their meaning prior to reading. Finally, they students make a prediction about the main idea of the book. The words can be reviewed each day before reading the book. It is a good resource for the students to have for writing with the vocabulary after being exposed to it in reading.
