I often have parent volunteers sign-up for various in and out of class activities. I really enjoy having parents during my literacy hour, especially when they can listen to a child read out loud. I provide them with specific reading guidelines, which helps me focus on my small group work, and the parent to feel empowered to do something meaningful for the teacher.
This packet explains to the parent what to do, questions to ask the child, and what kinds of notes to make for the teacher. Parents fill in a log for me, as well as write notes for me to look over later on in the day.
Please note: the packet is targeted for higher level readers/grades 3-4, but can be adjusted to meet all needs.
This system also helps parents understand the reading process and appreciate the value and importance of their child reading developmentally and age-appropriate books.
