This 25-page PPT/student lab sheet walks you and your students through a TWO-DAY lab that focuses on physical changes, while cementing skills in calculating density. Students LOVED this two-day lab and it is so much fun to teach!!!
Students, in pairs, are given a gummy bear (Haribo gummy bears work best). Prior to the experiment, they are required to brainstorm a hypothesis as to what they think will happen if they leave a gummy bear in water over night. I require them to right down their hypothesis in their notebook in the correct format..."I hypothesize that....because....."
Students use a triple beam balance to measure its mass, and measure its length, width, and height to calculate volume. Once they have recorded its mass and volume they calculate the gummy bears density. Once they have recorded their data, students are given a small Dixie cup, label it with their initials, and put the gummy bear in it with some water (about half the cup should be filled with water). Once this is finished, students put their gummy bears in a designated part of class and wait until tomorrow to see the changes.
I merged the second day's PPT with the first day's. On the second day, students retrieve their gummy bear and measure it's mass, volume, and density again to see how much it grew. Gummy bears usually grow between 300-400%. They then write out a conclusion based on their hypothesis and we discuss why the gummy bear grew so big but did not lose any color (that discussion slide is included). Finally, students determine that this was a physical change and not a chemical change that took place.
