Gummy Bear Osmosis Lab using Claim, Evidence, Reasoning and Rebuttal
Student’s will conduct a lab answering the question: How is water absorbed through a selectively permeable membrane? They will make a claim about what they think will happen to a Gummy Bear Candy after soaking it in water for 24 hours. In this experiment students will first read a short C.E.R.R. article explaining the concept of osmosis and diffusion. After they have read the article they will move into the experiment making their claim. They will conduct the experiment making a data table of results, learning how to calculate percent change, graphing their percent changes and then continuing by explaining the results of their data using the C.E.R.R approach to using scientific argument in science inquiry. Finally, they will write a short rebuttal as to why their claim may be incorrect.
