Just because you are preparing for a test doesn't mean your students have to be bored out of their minds! Talking about current events makes content so much more engaging and relevant for students. I designed these questions to go along with an article from NewsELA about the recent school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School (“Student Survivors Emerge as Critics of Current Gun Laws"). I have included five STAAR aligned questions to help make your test prep more meaningful for your students as well as an open-ended questions that asks for their own opinion on this topic. I recommend pairing this activity with a class discussion about gun control and shootings in America.
I designed these questions to align to the 5th Grade TEKS (5.2B, 5.10A, and 5.Fig19E) but this could also be used as enrichment with 4th graders or as remediation with 6th graders.
