Episode 3: Into the Tropics. In the third installment of Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steel", Diamond explains how the southern parts of the African continent became colonized by European settlers and goes on to explain some of the reasons for why Africa is the way it is today. The first European settlers came to Southern Africa in the mid-1600’s and began settling on the Cape of Good Hope. The area around the Cape of Good Hope lies at a similar latitude as Europe, and so the temperatures and climates are almost exactly the same. This allowed the Europeans to establish prosperous farms in Southern Africa. On and around the cape, the European settlers cultivated wheat and barley and set up ranches with cattle and sheep. By being able to establish successful agricultural processes in Southern Africa, Europeans were able to establish themselves as powerful colonizers
