Gutenberg and the Printing Press- Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- this is a 12 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teachers key for easy marking. It contains 24 questions based on the Biography.com website and the online New World Encyclopedia.
The activity will ask students to proceed to the Biography.com website and watch a video clip as well as read an article about the life of Johannes Gutenberg. Both sources will explain who Gutenberg was, the importance of his invention, and how movable type was a superior method of printing compared to the slow and unreliable method of copying books by hand. Gutenberg's bible is discussed and how his creation of easy to produce literature changed the face of Europe. After finishing on the Biography.com site, students will proceed to an online encyclopedia which will provide more impacts that the printing press had on Europe. The improvement of literacy rates, the decline in Latin and rise of vernacular languages, and the easy transfer of scientific knowledge are all covered. When students are finished, a link is provided at the end of the assignment for a video which shows how a Gutenberg printing press operates.
This webquest can be easily used as an introduction to the topic, a study guide, or a quick and easy sub plan.
