Written to meet the demands of the new Common Core and PARCC test, this 1-week unit includes an interactive anticipation guide, activities to assist students in close reading and annotation, the LIQFU! strategy for accurately quoting written material, an introduction to character motivation, a lesson on characterization and close reading, and an outline for writing a summary. The culmination of this unit includes a survey about teen spending habits, a satirical article about teen consumerism, imagery and music worthy of annotation, and a popular new song by Lorde with an important message. Finally, students are asked to write an essay asking whether Madame Loisel is a static or dynamic character. The class is usually fairly divided in their opinion, so the prompt also makes for a great debate. Thank you for looking!
