Units on Lovecraft have been universally well-received by students. Lovecraft's works powerfully provoke the imaginations of readers. He can play a powerful part in an English Language Arts classroom.
I recommend "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" as your starting reading. Other possibilities include "The Call of Cthulhu" (a bit more difficult of a read) and "The Necronomicon" (I've included this short work in the Powerpoint here). I usually take a day and have my students illustrate Lovecraftian horrors (pretty amazing if you have good artists). There is also a documentary on Lovecraft called "Fear of the Unknown" which would also make an effective supplement to your unit.
