The poem ("The Heavy Bear Who Goes With Me" by Delmore Schwartz) has been annotated using different colours to help students identify patterns in the poem, to help them craft a coherent response. Key ideas/arguments are provided.

This annotated document demonstrates the four-step approach to reading poetry:

1. Analyse the title
2. Group words/phrases with similar effects/meaning together
3. Organise these effects using the S.E.M. structure
4. Identify the relevance of these effects to the title of the poem
