If you are working on one-step linear equations (if you are teaching 5th grade in Virginia... or teaching sixth grade and have students who need a little review) this HALLOWEEN SCAVENGER HUNT is a 'boo-tiful' and fun resource.
This product is created to provide a fun way to practice modeling one-step linear equations during that ‘boo-tiful’ time of year called Halloween!!
Included are 12 different problems for students to solve. I have students work with partners to encourage discussion and reflection. Scatter the cards/problems around the room prior to the activity. Pairs of students each start with one card/problem, solve the problem, and record the answer on their answer sheet (included). After a minute or two the teacher signals and students go on a scavenger hunt to find the next card. They look for their answer in the PREVIOUS ANSWER explosion at the top of the card. This works for self-checking as well as for moving students along.
For a follow up, fall, fun activity I like to distribute small brown paper bags of treats to partners (sometimes it’s counters, sometimes it’s candy treats). Then I have partners use the bag and counters to create their own Halloween problem and write an equation to go along with their problem. A blank card is included for students to use to write their problem.
