Description

Kids move, read and write when they do this activity based on 30 Halloween words. All words can be added to your Halloween word wall. All words can be used for other writing and spelling activities, too!

This is more challenging than your basic write-the-room activity. This activity and set of printables are appropriate for grades 2-4 reading levels.

Students read short definitions or clues, and write the room for the Halloween words that go with them. The challenge is reading the clues that may ask for parts of speech, such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives, as well as synonyms and antonyms. They will each have a recording sheet to write the words that go with the โ€œhintโ€, clue or definition.

3 Different Levels: Great For Differentiating Skills with Word Work/Word Study:

There are three skill levels that range from easy to more difficult ("Freaky Level A, Batty Level B, and Creepy Level C") for differentiating instruction. If you laminate and cut out the words on each page (2 on each page totaling 30 words), you can tape them around the room and reuse them. If you laminate, there are only 15 full pages to laminate, and is worth the effort because the words can be used in many more word skill-building ways!

Multi skill levels

Levels A, B, C range from easy to more challenging. This allows plenty of opportunity for differentiating instruction and practice in your classroom, and accommodating for a multi-age or a classroom with various skill levels.

Objectives for Levels A, B, C

"Freaky Level A" (easiest)- Students will identify, read, and write each word that corresponds to their recording sheet in alphabetical order, using the words that are on the walls around the room.

"Batty Level B and Creepy Level C" (more challenging)- Students read phrases, clues for meanings, and parts of speech to identify, read, and write the words on the walls around the room. Level C will be slightly more challenging than Level B. (Caveat: If some are able to figure out clues without finding the words in the room, their challenge is to read the clues correctly on the recording sheet, and to spell their answers correctly.)

*Try different activities. Here are some more ways to have a howling good time:

1. Use this as a writing center or station activity.

2. Use the vocabulary words in a writing center for Halloween stories, journal writing, or as sentence writing exercise.

3. Use the vocabulary words for a spelling unit.

4. Use the word cards to create a mini flip book as flash cards, with illustrations and/or sentences written on back of each page.

Please check out the preview, which includes most of -but not all of the pages in the file. There are 15 word cards (2 words on each one). Not all are shown in the preview. Not all recording sheets are shown in the preview. There are 23 pages without the the cover, teacher notes and credits.
