Finally, a guide to Hamilton for English teachers! This is an amazing play, and this guide will make it much easier for students to navigate it, either as a whole class or in guided reading/literature circle groups!
I read and listened to Hamilton (the musical) with my 7th and 8th graders in Reading class. This is the reading guide I used with them. It includes questions they should be able to answer the first time reading through as well as some questions they could answer when going through scenes (or the whole play) a second time (these are marked with "2nd" and are in italics, so they'd be easy to skip or give to higher students as you see fit). There are some basic comprehension questions, but there are also higher order questions that point to theme, author's message, and character portrayal.
There are also descriptions of some end of unit projects my students really enjoyed and a description of an arts integration project that my students LOVED (I collaborated with my art teacher and they completed these with her).
I have included an ANSWER KEY, but just a word of warning that 90% is filled out but the 2nd look questions do not have answers on them and the answers are sometimes given in bullet points--we filled out the packets together as a class at times. If you have any questions, please let me know!
If you want to see the types of questions I typically offer or the depth of analysis, please download my free Liar and Spy guide.
I hope you enjoy this as much as I did--we listened to the musical as a class and completed the guide together and they LOVED it.
