HAMLET QUOTES AND QUESTIONS—Evaluation of Comprehension and Analysis Skills

This is an activity that I administer to students upon completion of Hamlet.

It could be used as a final evaluation of students’ understanding of the play.

There are 19 popular quotes with 43 corresponding questions requiring kids to demonstrate their understanding of plot, characterization, theme, diction, and literary devices.

The questions are designed to prompt students to relate the given quote to other aspects of the play, in doing so demonstrating their coherent understanding of the work.

There are two cited quotes per page with questions following and space for student responses.

I’ve included an identical detailed key.

Below are the first lines of the quoted excerpts that the activity addresses:

 “Though yet of Hamlet our dear brother's death….”
 “O, that this too too sullied flesh would melt….”
 “Haste me to know 't, that I, with wings as swift….”
 “O horrible, O horrible, most horrible!”
 “How strange or odd some'er I bear myself….”
 “O villain, villain, smiling, damnèd villain!”
 “Marry, sir, here's my drift… through indirection find direction….”
 “[…] The spirit that I have seen….”
 “Get thee to a nunnery. Why wouldst thou be a….”
 “To be or not to be—that is the question….”
 “How smart a lash that speech doth give my / conscience.”
 “O, my offence is rank it smells to heaven….”
 “Mad as the sea and wind when both contend….”
 “Now, Hamlet, where's Polonius?”
 “How came he dead? I'll not be juggled with.”
 “That skull had a tongue in it, and could sing…”
 “Not a whit, we defy augury. There is a….”
 “Does it not, think thee, stand me now upon….”
 “I am justly killed with mine own treachery.”
