This is a SUPER writing assignment that I give out BEFORE I actually begin the play Hamlet. Students are given the speech and are asked to analyze the content of it, the characterization, the tone, diction, and imagery --- all key parts to an AP curriculum and to understanding artistry of writing. Students are given guidelines as to how to organize the one page analysis, beginning with a jazzy opening sentence, supplying specific, crisp adjectives, etc.
THIS IS A WINNER. Students understand the character of Hamlet and his problem and his angst before we even begin play. Excellent for showing how writing components add to meaning.
We use SMARTBOARD to show speech and to analyze components the day when the essay is due ... we circle diction, imagery, etc.
