This activity allows students to create a chronological timeline of the events that led to Australia’s Federation. The events included begin with Henry Parkes’ oration at Tenterfield through to Federation celebrations in 1901. There are two options for this activity; the first is to create a flipchart timeline and the second is to create a foldable linear timeline (please see photographs in preview file). The information has been provided for the students to read and sort in to chronological order and glue on to their timeline. Once students have created their timeline they are able to complete the question sheet demonstrating their understanding. These timelines could also be enlarged to A3 size and presented in the classroom on coloured board.
This activity supports the following Australian Curriculum content descriptors:
Key figures, events and ideas that led to Australia’s Federation and Constitution (ACHASSK134)
Sequence information about people’s lives, events, developments and phenomena using a variety of methods including timelines (ACHASSI125)
The contribution of individuals and groups to the development of Australian society since Federation (ACHASSK137)
I have found that students enjoy creating great displays to show their learning and that by including these types of activities in our History lessons they are more interactive and engaged.
I hope to help both teachers and students enjoy this important topic!
