In the novel Hatchet, Brian, the protagonist encounters many animals in the Canadian wilderness.
This animal data chart is intended for students to conduct research and gather facts about fifteen animals mentioned in the book. This activity may be completed before, during or after having read the book.
Research can be done in the school library and/or the internet or ipads in the classroom. Students may work alone or together with a partner.
Once the data is entered in the chart, students may choose one of the animals and write an informative text about it. If there is enough time, students may present their animal to the class.
Animals included in the chart are: porcupine, snake, squirrel, bear, beaver, moose, timber wolf, kingfisher,snowshoe rabbit, cottontail rabbit, skunk, bluegill, snapping turtle, mosquito and ruffed grouse (foolbird).
File also contains three animal charts with the following categories for students to research:
food, habitat, unique features, interesting facts and color and size. Under the category color and size students will view an actual picture of the animal to facilitate comprehension.
A blank chart template is included for you to use on your own perhaps to add plants mentioned in the book.
