First, I love my "Five-Finger Factoids". It keeps ting so easy for students. I just converted this over to counties/state along with our own parish/state. I just wanted a simple project that my own student could do without much thinking on their part. I wanted them to remember facts but not a heavy dose; just enough so that they could remember these particular towns/landmarks/waterways/highways, their choice and no two students would have the same – which made their research unique.
Simple enough; and it worked. Therefore, I came up with a new five-finger research project for them and it turned out to be a big hit and very simple and unique.
I gave them their own choice of towns/landmarks/waterways/highways – big /small/newest/oldest, their own choice of facts and their own simple number – a single hand's worth - which was easy to remember. And it worked. They all did well on the test I gave them later. Even for the last fact – most. I became "Happy Camper, so to speak."
Over the years you never know what will work so you just keep trying things until something clicks and this one did. Hope you find it works of you also.
