Product Description
In order to assess evidence, students must be able to use the sources origin nature and purpose to evaluate its reliability, accuracy and utility. I try to get my students to interrogate sources as if they were a person standing in front of them. Would you trust what they have to say? Are they in a position to know what they are talking about? Is it useful in relation to the question?

This is a hard skill to foster so I developed this lesson activity using one source and assessing all three areas. It works as a teacher led activity and/or as a printed out booklet that the students fill individually.
They have to say ways the source is both reliable and limited based on Origin, Nature and Purpose. They must do the same for accuracy using the source and own contextual knowledge. Then they do the same again for utility, based on the source's content, its reliability and accuracy. So the activities build.
Finally they use the scale of utility (adjectives describing 'how much' the source is useful) to write a paragraph answering the question.

The source I have chosen is a poster asking for volunteers on the home front in the USA during WW2. I think this a topic many students will be familiar with and once they have tried this activities once with this source, you can do it again and again with any other historical source and question.

Thanks for looking.
