I have always been amazed at just what my students have figured out "what is important" as they create their own Historical Figures tab booklet – male/female/black/white/Cajun/Creole/Islenos/etc. I love seeing and reading their take on the lesson. Rarely do I get disappointed.
This booklet only requires 6 Historical Figures (there is black pages so you can add more) which means my students are not require to write/draw a lot but it does make them think about who IS important within the chapter.
I generally do not take points off for their artwork unless they just don't do any or it is a stick figure are the drawing is of the WRONG person/gender or it is not colored. I have an art degree but THEY don't so points are generally not given – good or bad.
