Areas of Focus within this PowerPoint
This PowerPoint begins showing the regions on Earth with estimated numbers of people infected with the HIV virus, It then describes the origins and spread of HIV, A step by step series of slides describes what HIV stands for. A 1-20 Quiz follows that asks students to identify the person or persons who are HIV positive from a set of 20. At the end of the quiz, students take a guess only to find that you can't tell. The PowerPoint then goes on to describe how anyone can be infected. The PowerPoint then describes you can contract HIV through exchange of sexual fluids, discusses the important of abstinence, compares abstinence vs. prevention measures, describes contact with blood, and use of injecting drugs, and more. An HIV simulation is described that demonstrates how a virus such as HIV can quickly spread through a population. Each student is given a cup (non transparent) filled halfway with water. Teacher secretly puts baking soda in two cups at the beginning of the class. Each student is given a risk factor and needs to swap according to their risk (discussion about who is risky etc is conducted by teacher) Teacher directs swapping of cup fluid from student to student. At the end, teacher tests cup with litmus paper to see which students contracted the virus. The students then try to work backwards figuring out who started with the virus. This is a great activity. The PowerPoint then goes on to describe when HIV becomes AIDS and what AIDS stands for.

The next half of the PowerPoint describes other STD's, has informative bullet lists with pictures that are gross but not so gross as to get you in trouble. A focus on genital herpes and contraction, as well as two interesting songs about Gonorhea and Gential Herpes are provided that are sure to make for an engaging lesson. STD prevention, condoms, and more make this a very important lesson for the students. Most images are extreme close-ups so you can't really see the genitals, but can see the puss and discharge etc. For some some conservative teachers / schools, this PowerPoint may cross the line. It walks just on the line for my school and has been approved by my administrator. The PowerPoint concludes with a 5 question quiz. The answers are revealed at the end. Please view the entire slideshow prior to use in your classroom. Please delete any part you are uncomfortable with showing. A quiz of 10 questions with visuals is built into the PowerPoint slideshow. The answers are provided at the end so the students can self assess.

This PowerPoint includes critical notes (Red Slides), exciting visuals, challenge questions, activities with directions and more. Text is usually placed at the top of the slide so it can be read from all angles of a classroom. Color coded slides, as well as a shade technique is used to increase student focus and allows the teacher to control the pace of the lesson. These PowerPoints are meant to be interactive as possible and ask many questions, provides built in review opportunities, explains directions to activities, and much more.
