groups together all the poetry in this collection to give students multiple practice opportunities to analyze poetry in the HMH Collections Collection 5 Poems: "The Road Not Taken," "Paul Revere's Ride," and "The Light! Ah! The Light!" Common Core based activities specifically target rhyme, rhythm, theme, and writing about poetic analysis. More specifically, the following is included in this resource:

Rhyme Time & I’ve Got Rhythm

These activities go with the Level Up online activities with HMH Collections. Students learn how rhyme and rhythm affect the meaning and tone of poetry.

These activities go with the Level Up online activities with HMH Collections. Students learn how rhyme and rhythm affect the meaning and tone of poetry.

CLOSE READ of “The Road Not Taken”

Students read the poem and then answer the questions in a close reading of this seemingly simple poem.

Theme Activities

Students will determine the themes of all of the poems and write a paragraph about them.

Paul Revere’s Ride Plot Activity

Students will complete a plot activity that requires text evidence in a graphic organizer which can then be used to complete the Performance Task.

Collaborative Discussions

All poems have collaborative discussion graphic organizers.

Performance Task

Students will choose three to four stanzas and discuss how these stanzas fit into the overall poem structure of “Paul Revere’s Ride.”

Rubrics

Standards-based rubrics included for each writing assignment and performance task, which allows students to understand what they have accomplished or need to revise to improve their writing. I usually allow students to revise if they receive a 2 or lower (for me a 2 is a C) for a higher score (or grade).
