This art activity is a great way to reinforce the short o vowel sound taught in Theme 2 of the Houghton Mifflin Reading Series. After reading the story Hot Fox Soup, I discuss the short o sound and have my students find the words that contain the short o vowel sound. Then I see if my students can name words with the short o sound. The following day I show them an example of the finished Fox's Vat Activity on construction paper. I have the students take out their books and list the characters in the story Hot Fox Soup. I then write the character's names (ox, pig, hen, fox) on the on the whiteboard. Then, I have the students choose one of the characters from the story. I then pass out the characters printed on white paper for the students to color and cut. Next, students come up with a sentence to write on the line on their vats that includes their character's name. For example, if a student picks Fox as his/her character then he/she might write - Fox had hot ox soup. I check their sentences. Students then write out the sentences on their vats in pencil. I check that they have capitols and periods written. I then have the students color their vats. Students can be creative with the design of their vats. They can make boiling, orange water or whatever they like. Afterwards, students cut out their vats. Students then glue their characters on top of their boiling pots. I then hand out construction paper (any color works). Finally, students glue their vats on construction paper and write their names. I usually have them trace their sentence with a pen or black crayon.
