This Family Tree activity is a great way to reinforce the family relations and vocabulary in Theme 4 of the Houghton Mifflin Reading Series. After reading the story Who is in a Family, I discuss the vocabulary associated with family. I ask my students if they can name all the people in their family. We discuss how people in a family are related. The following day I revisit family relations. I ask them to name some family vocabulary. I then show them a display of the finished Family Tree Activity on the SMARTBOARD. I explain that a family is like a tree and their family members are connected. I have students cut out their tree trunks first. Then, students glue down the trunks on construction paper. Next, they cut out the leaves and glue them on the branches. The following day I usually have my students write about their families.
*This activity requires some preparation. I usually print out the tree trunks on brown colored paper. I usually choose a green colored paper for the leaves. I also have a blue piece of construction paper ready for the students to glue down their trees.
*I have the file in both Rich Text Format for Windows/Mac (so you can edit) and PDF.
