Holes Literature Guide Novel Study

Your students will unravel the mystery of Camp Green Lake and determine how the past is connected to the present by using my ready to print worksheets that include: plot, setting, characters, cause and effect, predicting, themes, main ideas, summarizing, discussion questions for each chapter, symbols, choices (extension activities), connections, opinions, figurative language, rising, falling actions, climax, and more. MANY teaching ideas are given for each page, as well as pages that have detailed instructions, answers and information about the story. There are comprehension questions that can be used for guided reading groups or literature circles.

These activities will fit your students needs and cover all the essential elements of the story.

I designed these pages to have the look of the desert environment which is the main setting in Holes. The font and lines are in brown but will print nicely in black. I realize that many school districts are cutting back and not allowing the use of color ink.

The worksheets can be used with small or large groups. Use them as independent class work, assessments, discussion starters, writing prompts or as homework.

Brainstorming and determining the best answers, as they cite information from the book, creates an atmosphere of higher level thinking. Analyzing text, as they build on each others' responses, and articulating their own ideas, help students become self directed learners.

As students discuss the story, it creates lively discussions and an atmosphere that encourages better literal and inferential understanding of the story’s components. It also helps students, who have difficulty understanding text or composing answers, become better readers and writers.

After students have brainstormed in small groups to determine the best answers, it's suggested their answers be reviewed with the whole group so they will have an even better and deeper understanding of the story.

The worksheets can be used as class or homework assignments. If used as informal assessments, it will help determine students’ strengths and weaknesses.

The majority of the activities are aligned with the Common Core.
