A Visit from Mr. O'Hara is a fun one page story about a leprechaun, who visits someone and causes a lot of havoc. As students read along there are 14 fill-in-the-blanks. They must use the reading skill of using context to think of words that make sense. We used to call this reading strategy a Cloze Technique. I'm not sure if they still use that term? This story should work well with 2nd and 3rd graders. High-functioning 1st graders should be challenged by it. You may need to guide some. As for kindergarteners, unless the students are very strong readers, you might have to read the story to them. When you get to the blanks, they can brainstorm answers. Answers that fit could go up on the board or overhead. Then you could read it back to them. It will give you a fun activity for the St. Patrick's Day holiday. Sorry I didn't have it ready sooner.
