The Morgan horse is the state animal of Vermont and Massachusetts. It was the horse breed depicted in Marguerite Henry’s book, Justin Morgan Had a Horse, which was made into a Disney movie. All Morgans trace back to a stallion named Figure, who was given to a man named Justin Morgan. The horse later became identified by the name of its owner, and "the Justin Morgan horse breed” was born.
This minilesson / worksheet briefly explains the history and development of the Morgan horse while highlighting the horse’s favorable attributes. The horse is described in the stages of foal, colt, and stallion. Other vocabulary includes: century, breed, offspring, sire, and disposition. Students are directed to underline the main ideas of each of the four informative paragraphs. Then they answer ten multiple choice questions that assess vocabulary, as well as, reading comprehension skills. Comprehension skills include drawing conclusions, recognizing details, and of course, determining main ideas.
