This activity involves students practicing using the HR Diagram to find characteristics of stars. This activity goes beyond basic characteristics of stars to spectral class and determining what kind of stars are suitable for life-- using our own Sun for comparison. The activity is designed for high school astronomy students or 8th grade Pre-AP science students. This activity challenges students to think about what the criteria for life are and how many stars there are out there. This activity satisfies the student expectation 8.8A Describe components of the Universe, including stars, nebulae and galaxies, and use models such as the Hertzprung-Russell diagram for classification and Astronomy.11 A and G : identify the characteristics of main sequence stars, including surface temperature, age, relative size, and composition, use the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram to plot and examine the life cycle of stars from birth to death
