MY APPROACH TO TEACHING and to the offered UNITS on this website is to pepper the worksheets (and, optionally, the quizzes) with informational guides that serve as text-book-like how-to instructions. How the teacher puts it all together is left to that teacher's unique approach to teaching. In other words, these offerings are PROBLEM-BASED and not lesson-plan based. The difference is profound. I do not pretend to know how you should speak to your students and refuse to offer canned lesson plans--the material will serve as your own guide as well as for the students themselves.

Discussed here are PROBABILITY problems starting with the most basic and then including some dealing with dice and cards followed by permutations and combinations of events and ending with geometric probabilities. A real attempt is made here to show that this is all INTERESTING, USEFUL and, in the case of the last skill. very challenging. You know, a lot of what I have developed is for at-risk kids BUT many of them have hidden abilities and an often-unstated desire to be legitimately challenged. Some of this is, indeed, challenging.

INCLUDED is a TEACHER's GUIDE of every teaching reference utilized by the enclosed problems as well as every (large) diagram needed by the problems. From this alone the unit can be thought through and designed. Also included is a SPECIAL RUN of level 1 (simplest) problems that basically provides you with a preview of each of the skills.

FOUR possible sets of worksheets are included (5, 10, 15 or 20 problems in each of the 10 main skill areas for a total of 50, 100, 150 or 200 problems).

SEVEN possible quizzes (each with 10 problems) are also included--2 at a level 2 (easiest), 2 at a 2 and 3 level (a mix of easiest and more average), 2 at a level 3 (average) and 1 at the combined levels of 3 and 4 (most difficult).

Look at the PREVIEW to see what order the 10 skills are in and the possible approach taken (usually I present the skills in the order that is most logical for teaching but in this particular unit you may want to reorder the skills to fit your tastes). Also, the 4 snapshots can help determine if this is or is not for you. Furthermore, send me an email if you have a question.

[The problems in All WORKSHEETS and PREVIEWS are printed in difficulty (1 [easy], 2 [not so easy], 3 [proficiency] up to 4 [mastery]) order within a skill. The actual difficulty level appears slightly to the left of the DK box of each problem in a very small font. Also, instructional references appear on worksheets but are optional on quizzes.]

One more thing: all of these materials were created using my usual database because I was given the task in 2011 of teaching Applied Math to at-risk kids. The problem was that they, as a group, have a very hard time with on-line math courses and my school wanted to offer an alternative. This unit, then, is the result of several years' worth of tweaking.

BUNDLES: The entire 1st semester course is posted here as: HS [Remedial] Applied Math II FULL textbook-less course (BUNDLE).

The previous unit of this course is UNIT 4: Transformations and the next one is UNIT 6: Word Problems.
