This unit examines the Progressive policies of the presidencies of Taft and Wilson. It also includes lessons on women achieving suffrage, the failures of the Progressive Movement, and the reasons for the end of the Progressive Era.
I) Taft alienating Progressives and Theodore Roosevelt returning to found his own political party
II) Wilson and the Democrats sweeping the Election of 1912
III) Wilson's antitrust measures
IV) The federal income tax and the creation of the Federal Reserve
V) Women gaining suffrage with the 19th Amendment
VI) Wilson's failure to support civil rights and the Progressive Era coming to an end
There are six separate lessons in this unit. For each one to two page reading there are three pages of student activities that include reading comprehension questions, vocabulary activities, guided reading activities, student summaries, and a student response essay question. There is enough material to cover 3-6 days of class.
*My students typically complete an assignment in the 30-40 minute range, which allows for ample lead in discussion prior to the issuing of the assignment.
