My students always want to know if we are alone in the universe. The Habitable Zone Simulation helps move your discussion further than, "...seems like an awful waste of space." The simulation provides a clear visual for what habitable zones are, where life could be present, and how this varies between solar systems.
The Habitable Zone simulation is also a fantastic way to reinforce and expand student understanding of the stellar life cycle. Students can review different types of stars and how way stars die influences the habitable zone and the potential for solar systems to contain life. For example, students can play out the entire timeline for our solar system, including the death of the Sun in a white dwarf, to see how our habitable zone will change over time.
