Description

This second grade habitats & ecosystems unit is designed with high engagement, hands-on science lesson plans. This resource enables you to easily plan and teach an in-depth unit that is both effective and fun. Students learn about land and water habitats and identify ecosystems within these biomes. They compare habitat diversity and discover its importance. Students identify adaptations living things develop to survive on land and in water and how plants and animals change their environment. They learn about communities and populations within ecosystems and ways they depend on each other for survival.

Students are engaged through 7 high-interest lessons in a vividly detailed teaching Power Point, science journal and center activities, partner discussion questions, and hands-on lab investigations for each lesson. Assessments are differentiated for each lesson and the final unit test. I've included an easy-prep unit binder with section dividers and tabs that makes it easier than ever to plan and teach an organized unit.

Aligned to both 2nd grade NGSS Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems and CCSS, this flexible 3 week unit includes detailed, scripted science lesson plans and teacher’s notes with pictures for each lesson and lab. The unit can easily be shortened to 2 weeks depending on the number of labs you choose to do. A multitude of high quality science focus wall resources, posters, vocabulary and objective cards, science center activities and more support each lesson.

Lesson Topics

Lesson 1: Identifying Habitats & Ecosystems

Lesson 2: Exploring Land Habitats

Lesson 3: Adapting to Land Habitats

Lesson 4: Exploring Water Habitats

Lesson 5: Adapting to Water Habitats

Lesson 6: Habitat Diversity & Interdependence

Lesson 7: Protecting Habitats

Lab Experiments/ Investigations

Students explore micro-habitats, simulate adaptations, build models, and conduct investigations in the following labs:

What Lives At School? Exploring Micro-habitats

How Do Fish Breathe Underwater? Gill demonstration

Build a Model Water Plant

Design & Build a Land and Water Habitat on a Plate

How Do Water Animals Stay Warm? Blubber Demonstration

Comparing Habitat Diversity with simple models

Habitats/Biomes Addressed

Deserts, rainforests, deciduous, coniferous, and temperate forests, grasslands, tundras, oceans, tide pools, coral reefs, wetlands, swamps, marshes, rivers, and streams.

Students explore ecosystems, micro-habitats and urban habitats. They discover ways ecologists, engineers, and other scientists collaborate to protect and restore endangered habitats.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations).
Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
NGSSK-2-ETS1-2
Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.
NGSS2-LS4-1
Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats. Emphasis is on the diversity of living things in each of a variety of different habitats. Assessment does not include specific animal and plant names in specific habitats.
