This novel study accompanies the book "Hachiko Waits" by Leslea Newman. Students will truly enjoy this Japanese story of a faithful Akita who never loses his devotion to his owner. This story is based on a true story, which is explained in the book itself. Students will become more familiar with Japanese culture and language with a detailed glossary in the back of the book, and questions in the novel study that require students to think critically about the themes presented in the book.
As students read each chapter, they will guided by a before reading and after reading set of questions. All "after you read" questions are text dependent and require students to dig deep into the text to reach their responses. Each chapter also includes 1-2 vocabulary building questions, requiring students to use their context clues skills to determine the meaning of unknown words. Your students will love reading this heartwarming story, and you will enjoy a complete answer key with suggested responses and text evidence citations to support your teaching.
CCSS alignment for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade included for each chapter.
