Had A Little Rooster is a popular folksong and songtale with 8 verses that I use as part of my First Steps in Music Curriculum. It is appropriate for Kodaly and Orff classrooms. I have used this song with handouts successfully in my K-2 classes. Had A Little Rooster can be found on Dr. John Feierabend’s CD “Had A Little Rooster” and is sung by Dr. Jill Trinka. I have students listen and eventually sing with the recording. My schools are K-2 so I taught everyone the same song at the same time and it was a hit with all grade levels! I have saved it as JPEGS within a powerpoint.
Page 1 is the cover page and I like to have it projected up on the board using my LCD projector at the beginning of the activity when I talk about the song.
Page 2 contains colored animals with the animal name and the sound they make. It is a great map for students to use for tracking which verse is next and to help them remember what animal comes next when they start singing the animals backwards. I project this on the LCD Projector.
Page 3 is the same page but in black and white (Printer Friendly!) so they can take it home to practice. They can color the pictures at home if they choose to. I tell students to teach someone at home the song and the pictures help students recall verses in order.
Page 4 contains lyrics to photocopy onto the back of the black and white picture page. Kids can practice reading and memorizing lyrics at their house. This also helps when they are teaching parents or siblings the song.
Page 5 is credits so you can see where all of the cute clipart is from.
