Students will read about the Fredonia Rebellion from a state historical marker. Before answering questions, have students discuss what they read with each other (groups or partners) and throw out some discussion questions:
1. What did Edwards discover when he reached Nacogdoches? (people were already living there)
2. Why would Edwards be so upset? (he invested lots of money and would stand to lose money if the settlers there didn't have to pay him)
3. Explain Stephen F. Austin's response to the rebellion. (sent militia to put down rebellion to show his loyalty to Mexico)
Have students complete word search and, if you choose, the Critical Writing assignment. The writing assignment will force them to have to think harder and thus will help in long-term retention of the material.
