The poets of these poems live in Haiti. They are teenagers. It is evident that most are looking towards a positive future with the love of nature surrounding them in their Haitian landscape.
The visual images in each poem is vibrant. I have asked students who read these poems to draw a lot with detail, while using critical thinking and reading comprehension strategies. There is a research site for students to learn about the perils that have befallen those in Haiti in order for the readers to understand the Haitian teenager’s optimism for their future. For pre-reading, students will learn the geographic location of Haiti and make some inferences. For post reading, students will write about the Haiti they have learned about through the Haitian children’s eyes. One activity will be to write a letter to one of the poets in this book.
