Looking for simple, yet engaging activities for the Middle School Math classroom? This particular activity is called the Half & Half Worksheet. It's an excellent way to let students try out new material in a low-pressure environment and allow the teacher to get immediate feedback on what the students understood.
Students are placed in pairs and given one worksheet per pair. They take turns doing the problems. Only the person doing the problem can write on the paper, but the partner is expected to check the work and can verbally help as much as needed. This allows students to receive explanations from peers which can be very helpful.
This is geared toward 6th and 7th grade. It includes simplifying expressions by combining like terms. They are required to identify like terms and add/subtract them. There are is no multiplication or division required. The problems start with just two terms and go up to a total of 5 terms with three different kinds of terms in a single problem. All coefficients are whole numbers.
