By second grade, my students don’t want to practice their handwriting any more – even though many of them really need the review. I made these practice pages a few years ago and now I have children begging, “Is it handwriting time yet?” :)

As we review and practice a letter a day, I teach the hand positions to show each letter in sign language. By the fourth day, the children can fingerspell “bad,” “cab,” “dad,” and “add,” and they’re hooked!

Each student page is only half a sheet of paper. The students practice capital and lowercase letters in isolation and within the context of a sentence. They have fun using some creativity when completing the sentence on each letter page.

After the Zz page, there are six Review pages. Use each review page after the letters on that page (for example, Aa, Bb, Cc, Dd, Ee, Review #1, Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Review #2 . . . .). After completing the whole set, you can continue to use the Review pages throughout the year as needed.

A half page with the full alphabet is included at the end of the packet; I’ve also included the numbers from zero to ten (which I love using for quick responses at math time!).

After learning the sign language alphabet, students can use it to practice their spelling words or to communicate silently with you in the hallway or in the middle of an assembly. It’s fun to learn another language!
