This is Halloween activity that combines a craft with a descriptive writing exercise. This activity can be used as a logic exercise as well! You can use this as just a Halloween craft if you teach little ones or students who are early readers (great for fine motor skills!), but if you are looking for a fun way to practice descriptive writing, there are three options contained in this resource. Your students will customize their house with inhabitants of their choice and then describe who lives inside (and in the tree!). Use either the provided fill-in-the-blank pages or have them write a description of their own (themed paper provided).
To use this as a fun mystery/logic exercise, you will need to keep the crafts and writing assignments separate, and then students will cycle through all of the writing passages to try and figure out which house belongs to which passage! A recording sheet is provided.
Second grade teachers please read!
Several teachers have commented that their second graders found this activity challenging. If your kiddos are on the younger side, struggle with fine motor activities, or are ESL learners, you may want to pass on this resource. However, if you have a small class, parent volunteers, or can work on this activity in small groups, I know your students will enjoy creating their Halloween house. Thanks so much for your interest in this activity.
